Another work of Art boxed and ready to ship

Spent Saturday morning in Rick's workshop helping to prepare his latest sculpture 'Rondo 1' for shipping to an exhibition in Western Australia. The more time I spend in Rick's workshop, the more I think we need to make a video blog about the process of building, shipping and showing these large metallic sculptures.

Dave (LifeKludger) Wallace has been mucking around with some artistic ideas in Second Life. In fact, Dave used a photo of one of Rick's pieces to experiment with some ideas and push the 'licensing' issues forward.

I hope to get Rick over to my place and record a podcast of Dave showing us around the Second Life art world. Watch out for it over at TPN.

I wonder what Pete Cogle and Beth would think about this interesting connection with sculpture and emerging technology???

Blimp over our house

Must be nearly Clipsal500 and WomAdelaide time again.  This large blimp with a big screen TV glued to the side has been buzzing the night skies over the city and beaches.  Grabbed this snap while watering the lawn (by hand in the prescribed hours of our weekly ration night).

Talking about Landed...In Singapore

Thanks for the shout out Podcast Pete!

While slaving away with contracts, proposals and invoices at my desk this morning, I was listening to the delightful mix of music from PodCastPete (episode 103).  At around 27 minutes into the show my ears prick up because I hear the name of a colleague.  Then, I  nearly fell out of my chair because Pete points out an amazing connection between himself and somebody mentioned in my last podcast.

Here is another example of the type of connections that can be made through podcasting.  Pete has listened to the last episode of the extraordinary everyday lives podcast in which we reach out to JP Rangaswami .   Pete mentions that JPworksfor BT, who are part owners of the podcast network to which Podcast Pete belongs!!  That brings Dave and I one step closer to a response to our 'Space Telephone call' to JP.

Now that is what I call 'making the Net Work' folks.

Miles and Jamie back at it

A stinking hot day (over 40 degrees celsius) but nothing could be cooler than seeing our boys back on stage only two weeks into the school year for the Henley and Grange food n wine day. What a hoot!

My Podcasting talk at UpConf2007

Today I presented my introduction to podcasting talk TWICE at the Microsoft Unlimited Potential Conference in Sydney.  I recorded the audio on my trusty iRiver ifp880 and it is uploading as I write this post.  The first session focussed almost exclusively on how to find and subscribe to podcasts.  The second one looked briefly on how to make your first podcast (a blog with an .mp3 attachment) and included a brief session at the flip-chart workshopping strategic applications of new media:

Links to the audio I plan to play during my talk, notes, and the powerpoint slides.

Uploading to iDisk without my mac

So I'm at the upconf2007 without my own computer (trusty olde mac) and I need to upload files to my .mac iDisk.  No problem, I event bought the windowsxp iDisk installer on a usb stick and it installed OK.  Here's the trick, when run for the first time the iDisk utility says 'additional entry to hosts file required'.  After ignoring that message (and turning off windows firewall) I find I cannot mount my iDisk - fails after long timeout.  Apples support database shows how one can enter a url for the iDisk in 'add new network place':

Try using a different URL to connect to the iDisk. Instead of using "http://idisk.mac.com/username", use "http://idisk.mac.com/username/?".

Trouble is, when using add network place wizard the authentication fails due to some UI code looking issues.

I got around this by:

Start->Run->http://idisk.mac.com/username - the authentication UI works and you get a web view of the folders with a little 'upload button'.

Hugo at upconf2007

Shoutout to Hugo the tabletpc guru - who's voice will feature in a little podcast mashup I plan to use in my talk for the Unlimited Potential conference in Sydney on Tuesday.  Hugo is a great example of someone who uses blogs (and podcasts / vidcasts) to connect with people - even rock stars.

Hugo - I loved the scissor sisters vid so much I have changed my plans from buying a Vista media centre PC to one of those 7" form factor jobs you guys raved about.  That's the power of sincere recommendations thru this new media.  Just one thing - what is the best model to run Vista, a bluetooth keyboard and USB2 for external drives?

Beth on PodShow Podcast

Beth Worrall appeared on her first podcast today - courtesy of Podcast Pete (from Adam Curry's famous podshow network).  I listened on the plane to Sydney for the Microsoft Unlimited Potential conference.  I plan to open my talk on podcasting with a snippet from this show.  Thanks for the shoutout to Dave and I - good evidence of the community connectedness that can happen in podcasts.

Look forward to the fruit of Beth's 'cunning plan' - sounds dangerous.

Kleefy - another whinging Aussie with a timezone problem

This morning I read with joy a report from UncleNick that Michael Kleef (another Aussie Microsoft Employee from Perth) got the attention of Steve Ballmer and most of the technical field staff - by asking a piercing question based on the handling of some very local timezone (daylight savings) issues.

I smiled quietly to myself for several reasons. Firstly Kleefy's reported 'knee trembler' at the hands of Mr Ballmer reminded me of how I felt when I was granted an audience with Brian Valentine (then the head honcho for Exchange Server) after spending extended time with the design team of 'platinum' (Exchange 2000). I was trying to explain how fundamentally broken the design of any product that buries transient data inside every device requiring 'patches' for updates was. In fact, I was known as the whinging Aussie with the timezone problem.

So Kleefy, while you have 'the ear of caeser', chase down Daniel McPherson in MSFT and get a copy of the 'Daylight Savings' whitepaper. If you read and understand it you will realise that ALL MSFT products need to find a way to update timezone information from the cloud automatically.

Secondly, it felt good to see new connections being made in my old stomping ground. I could almost feel the Seattle chill, and envisage the Pike Street markets while reading Uncle Nick's post. Great to see him hooking up with his new team-mates o/s. Just last night I was in touch with Amsterdam based MSFTee Daniel McPherson - the very same Daniel who worked with me on a 'TimeZone and Daylight Savings' white paper when he was a humble intern in Adelaide in the late 90's. So UncleNick, Kleefy, you guys should hook up with DanMc!

Here is a personal angle on all this that is interestng to me:

- I was Daniel's advice to follow podcasting that convinced me to leave Microsoft and follow the path I am now on

- It was Kleefy's blog that showed me the power of blogging, links and RSS connections

- Frank Arrigo gave me my first 'google juice' and taught me how to shepherd my flock

- Frank's appearance on Cameron Rielly's 'Gday world' podcast had a lot to do with the fact that I am in a conference call with Cam and the TPN hosts as I type this post, getting ready to jump on a plane to Sydney to present on podcasting at upconf2007.

Funny old world eh.

Video from blip.tv [ReadWriteCulture Mashup]

This is an experiment in creating a podcast from free web storage.  The essence of a podcast is a blog post with a link to the web address of an .mp3 file like the one below:

http://blip.tv/file/get/Fang-CreativeCommonsDRMReadWriteCultureDownesVsLessig171.mp3

Instructions: Add format to blip.tv video, upload .mp3 as soundtrack. There is your free web storage for audio .mp3, link from a blog post like this and you have your podcast infrastructure.  You can see the actual video in all its blip.tv goodness by clicking HERE.  (from there click SHARE->PERMALINKS to see all the geeky goodness.

Nice. If only soapbox did this.

Sabrage - Opening champagne with a sword

Today's Dr Karl podcast contains some fruity discussion on the physics of busting beer bottles by hand and ye olde French art of opening Champagne bottles with swords.  Nice.  Hope to hear something about the history of this on the next Napolean podcast.

upconf2007 Hey Frank - lets collaborate

This post is a shout out to Frank Arrigo who (like me) is presenting at Microsoft's Unlimited Potential conference (tag:upconf2007) in Sydney next week.  I am trying to achieve three things:

1. Start the upconf2007 tag for the event

2. Get a bit of banter between blog posts prior to the event as a demonstration of using online community to prepare for a public speaking engagement.

3. Get some specific Microsoft information about podcasting (since I am Apple / .mac biased).

So, how about it Frank.  I would love to see you write a post tagged upconf2007 with up to date information on PodCasting from a Microsoft perspective.  Especially if there are any services from (or favoured by) Microsoft for uploading audio (/video) to a web addressible store somewhere in the cloud.

p.s. You can follow my research / planning via:

How do live.spaces handle embedded video?
Any cool ideas on where to embed audio for a podcast??

Test for upconf2007.
HMMM - clicking Embed Videos only brings up a dialog to enter 'embed code' for already loaded up content.  NO hints / help as to where to put my own content.
